- TORONTO (25 Nov. 2007) – The Varsity Blues are the winners of the 2007 OUA women’s water polo bronze medal. In action Sunday morning at the University of Toronto Athletic Centre’s Varsity Pool, the Blues women defeated the Queen’s Golden Gaels 11-4.

Toronto opened up a 4-0 lead before Queen’s finally scored its first point midway through the second quarter. First team OUA all-star Nicole Brown (Toronto, Ont.) had a game-high six goals for the Blues, followed by a three-point performance from rookie Danielle Zanardo (Toronto, Ont.).

Melissa Dermody (Stoufville, Ont.) scored the first three goals for the Gaels, followed by one late marker from Ally Tosello (Hamilton, Ont.). Loucia Beveridge (Waterloo, Ont.) and Laura Shaw (Vancouver, B.C.) each tallied a single point for Toronto.

The Blues victory concluded a remarkable turnaround in 2007, finishing the regular season with a 6-2 record after going winless in the 2006 campaign. The medal is Toronto’s first in OUA women’s water polo since 2003-04, when the Blues captured the bronze medal with a 7-6 victory over Carleton.

Queen’s had captured the OUA bronze medal last fall, downing York 10-8, which had ended a two-year medal drought for the Gaels.

The OUA water polo championships conclude on Sunday afternoon with gold medal matches, both between the Carleton Ravens and McMaster Marauders. The women get under way at 1:20 pm, followed at 3:00 pm by the men.
